The track “Royals” was self-released to Soundcloud by New Zealand recording artist Lorde in November 2012 as part of “The Love Club EP.” The track was later distributed as a single and included on the studio album “Pure Heroine” in 2013. “Royals” went on to receive the APRA Silver Scroll Award and two Grammys in addition to being named a best song of 2013 by Rolling Stone, Time, and Spin.

So why do people love “Royals” so much? Critics and music lovers concur that the song’s strengths include its simple structure, haunting sound, and vulnerable yet strong vocals. The lyrics also comment on the lifestyle of both the rich and famous—something that many millennials may feel they will never attain (e.g. lyrics like, “we don’t care, we’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams”).
