Listen to Sam crush a classical guitar rendition of the Super Mario Bros. 2 theme

The pre-internet world of the mid 1980s was a different time and place. Well, obviously—a lot can change over the decades. Though, we can’t help but wonder if Koji Kondo ever anticipated how his music creations made for the dawn of digital entertainment might inspire future generations.

Should you never have heard of Kondo, it is our pleasure to introduce you to the virtuoso who scored dozens of iconic sound tracks for Nintendo. Those of us who grew up playing Nintendo are often given to whistling or humming a favorite tune from a Zelda or Mario game. Those tunes? Yeah, all the work of Koji Kondo!

There is something about Kondo’s compositions that brings a smile to anyone who grew up playing Nintendo games. That’s why we felt a little rush of excitement when we heard guitarist Sam Griffin’s beautiful rendition of the Super Mario Bros. 2 overworld theme on the classical guitar. Griffin captures the spirit of Kondo’s happy tune effortlessly.
